Neurography images of individual nerves are exquisite in comparison to conventional MRI images.

Unlike a standard MRI, a Neurogram shows the nerves including the dorsal root ganglions (d) which are important sensory processing points outside the spinal cord. An injured or compressed nerve may show up as hyperintense (h) – abnormally bright . An MRN also shows where spinal nerves (s) are bent out of their normal straight course by an entrapment.

The nerves that supply the skin and muscles of the shoulder, arm, and hand emerge from the spine and form the brachial plexus. This complex collection of nerves (located between the spine and the shoulder joint) are prone to injury, resulting in nerve-related conditions and entrapments. Milder injuries constitute thoracic outlet syndrome, but more serious examples typically fall under the diagnosis of brachial plexus disorder.
